We note a mark by the eye, nevertheless, the frosty mint surfaces are quite pleasing and a case can be made for an even higher numerical grade. Lot 1075
1861-S $20 Liberty. Pacquet reverse. PCGS graded AU-58. Choice About Uncirculated, well struck and lustrous with original mint frost around the date, letters and stars and within protected areas. There are contact marks on the devices and in the fields, but these are fewer than expected with similarly graded coins of the period and type. On the reverse, just below the eagle's left wing (the right, as viewed), there are two tiny dark inclusions, the result of foreign matter on the die or planchet during the striking process. These will serve as diagnostics for this particular specimen.

The history of the Paquet type $20 gold coin holds great fascination for the numismatic community and especially for those intetested in gold coinage, particularly double eagles. Walter Breen discusses the issue in his Encyclopedia, assigning nos. 7203 to 7206 to the known varieties (7205 for the 1861-S), and Q. David Bowers provides an excellent, expanded treatment of the Paquet reverse in his recently published work on double eagles.

Breen stated that this reverse type came about as an "attempt to improve the design" though no mention is made of why the design needed improvment. Bowers surmises that long standing problems with reverse die cracking may have been the impetus, but in any case, Assistant Mint Engraver Anthony C. Paquet began experimenting with new reverse design details in 1859. Dies dated 1861with Paquet's reverse were made in late 1860 for Philadelphia, New Orleans and the San Francisco Mint which would receive four pairs of Paquet reverse dies. The main difference between the old reverse and the Paquet reverse is that the letters on the Paquet are taller and narrower. Perhaps it was concluded that this slight change would spread the striking pressure in ways that would prevent die cracking around the legend?

Shortly after production began in Philadelphia on Jan. 5, 1861, it was dicovered that because of the design configuration, the reverse rim was narrower than expected and that this might lead to undesirable results during circulation. The experiment was not allowed to be played out as production was halted by Mint Director Snowden at Philadelphia. He also contacted the San Francisco Mint ordering cessation of production there as well. Bowers interestingly tells us that "the telegraph connection to the Wset Coast had not been finished past St. Joseph, Missouri, and the directive had to be carried overland to California from that point. By the time that the information was received, on February 2, 19,250 1861-S Paquet Reverse double eagles had already been struck and issued."

Of the original 19, 250 coins struck and placed into circulation, it is estimated that possibly 200 or so may have survived, aproximately 1% of the mintage. We expect that the presently offered specimen is among the finest of those survivors. The population at PCGS in this grade is only one, this coin, and of course it is the finest graded by that firm. Extremely Rare (PCGS # 8936) .
Estimated Value $115,000 - 125,000.

1878-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. The rarest Carson City mint $20 gold coin with only 13, 180 minted. At first glance this coin appears better than MS-61. At second glance, it still appears better! A few hairlines should not weigh so heavily on an otherwise excellent specimen free of any significant marks. It is well struck and retains full original mint luster in pale yellow orange shades. The diagnostic vertical die scratch confirms the variety but is in no way imposing. 1879-O $20 Liberty. SEGS graded AU-58 Saltwater Surfaces. Reasonably well struck with subdue matte-like surfaces which are slightly rough due to the saltwater action. Traces of mint luster remain in the protected areas and overall, a most desirable example of this important date. Our conservative grade is AU-50. Only 2325 pieces were struck and the last coin of this denomination struck at New Orleans. When comparing mintages, only the 1856-0 registers a lower number. The appearance of an 1879-0 at auction is an important numismatic event (PCGS # 8990) .

1881 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. One of the key dates of the entire $20 gold series with only 2199 business strikes plus 61 proofs made. Breen (no. 7280) says "possibly 12 known, mostly EF or AU with bagmarks". Bowers also commenting on circulation strikes adds, "…rarities in any grade, with no more than a few dozen believed to exist in numismatic hands". Sharply struck with bright luster and a bit of prooflike surfaces, typical for this date. Some contact marks primarily in the obverse fields are commensurate with the assigned grade. This is the only Mint State example graded by PCGS and it is quite possibly the finest known business strike. An exceptional opportunity for the Double Eagle specialist.

1882 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. An extremely rare date with only 571 pieces made for circulation (along with 59 Proofs). Breen states that apparently the same dies were used for both proof and business strikes. This specimen is well struck with prooflike fields. The tiny contact marks commensurate with the grade seem to provide a "frosty" look. A tiny rim bump is noted at about 12:30 o'clock on the reverse and mentioned for accuracy. Pop 2, with 1 in MS-60 and 2 in MS-61 as the best graded by PCGS. An ever popular date, seldom offered but always in demand.

1892 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. A very rare date from the Type III Liberty Head double eagle series. Philadelphia produced only 4,410 double eagle in 1892 and choice survivors are very scarce. This specimen has the eye appeal that every collector and/or dealer wants a choice AU 1892 double eagle to possess! Completely fresh with flashy light yellow gold fields graced by mint state luster. Only the faintest hairlines are in the fields. The top of Liberty's hair shows no friction nor does the tips of the eagles wings. Semi-reflective fields add to the eye appeal of this low mintage double eagle rarity. Very rare in mint state and we feel that this specimen should easily achieve mint state status. PCGS has graded only 13 in AU58 with 25 finer Housed in an older PCGS green label, fat letter holder (PCGS # 9019) .
